In 1992 Nuriootpa High School became the first school in Australia to legally operate a commercial winery. The school has won the trophy for the best school made wine in Australia 5 times. One Hogshead of Shiraz was made in our first year. Students have been involved in growing the grapes, picking the grapes, crushing the grapes, making the wine, bottling the wine, designing the wine labels,
publicity and marketing of the wine.

In 1998 we produced our first Ruby Port using school grown grapes, a tradition that has continued each year since. That year also saw the first premium Barossa Class Shiraz produced from grapes grown in Ebenezer. This is our flagship wine which has won numerous prestigious wine awards including silver medals in the Barossa Wine Show and a rating of 94/100 by international wine critic Robert Parker Jr.

Our 2003 Barossa Scholar Shiraz received a 93/100 in the Wine Spectator ratings as well as a Bronze medal at the Barossa Wine Show. Each year we produce four wines: Barossa Class Shiraz, Barossa Class Port, Barossa Scholar Shiraz and Barossa Scholar Chardonnay.

The wine program has featured on T.V. in Australia, the USA and Japan, our wines are exported internationally.

“ What started out in a tin shed back in 1992 has grown to become a ‘State of the Art’ Wine Education Program in South Australia’s premier wine producing region the Barossa Valley”

Barossa Class Shiraz, Barossa Class Port, Barossa Scholar Shiraz and Barossa Scholar Chardonnay are wines produced in association with the wine education program of Nuriootpa High School. Our 940 plus student campus (years 8-12) is situated in the heart of Australia's Barossa Valley. Many of the major local companies are directly involved in sponsoring and supporting our innovative award winning program. Their contibition is invaluable and we thank them for it.

These include Penfolds Wines, Wolf Blass Wines, Clear Image Labels, Vinpac International, ACI Glass, Heinrich Cooperage, Visy Board, the Barons of the Barossa and the Barossa Wine Show Committee.

Our wine program is part of our varied agricultural faculty, it involves students from years 9-12 in all areas of viticulture and winemaking with some senior students going on to produce their own individual wines.

These wines are available for sale, they are of exceptional quality and represent very good value for money. All profits go directly back into the school to support this and other educational initiatives. An order form is available to downoad via the link above.

We appreciate your interest in our school and wine program.
