Technology

Design, Technology and Engineering and Digital Technologies encompasses Material Solutions (Woodwork, Furniture Construction, Creative Woodwork, Composite Materials, Metalwork and Industry & Entrepreneurial Solutions), Robotic and Electronic Systems (Electronics & Microcontroller Robotics), Digital Communication Solutions (3D Computer Aided Design) and Digital Technologies.

The implementation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) plays a crucial role within product development and creates opportunities for students to apply all aspects of STEM into their task work. Technology is about ‘making and doing’ and recognising the role people play in designing and creating new technologies to meet a need or solve a problem.

The use and application of Digital Technologies is embedded across all aspects of the Technologies curriculum through the use of specific curriculum software (i.e. Circuit Wizard 2, RealPCB, Solidworks, Aspire and DayMap) and the specific use of BYOD and Mobile devices for educational applications is strongly supported.

Students develop the skills to look critically at technologies and issues arising from their manufacture and use. As students ‘make’, they test their ideas and thinking against reality by applying skills and techniques in safe and responsible ways. They learn to be creative, designing solutions to problems. Through this they learn that they can effect change and at the conclusion of their studies in Design, Technology and Engineering and Digital Technologies, students will have had a productive practical experience, supported by professional and passionate teaching staff, which equips them for lifelong learning in the Technological realm.

Curriculum Offerings/Materials Fees

Year 8:
Students undertake a five-week rotational block in Woodwork, Metalwork, Electronics and 3D CAD (using Solidworks 3D CAD) for a Semester. This gives the students a taste of what they might like to pursue for a whole Semester in Year 9.
Year 8 Technology is a compulsory subject within the Year 8 Curriculum at NHS. There is a one off materials fee of $20.00.

Year 9:
Students have the option of selecting from the following subjects for a whole Semester.
Woodwork - $40 materials fee
Metalwork – $40 materials fee
Electronics – $50 materials fee
3D CAD – Materials costs based on product design
Digital Technologies (ICT Focus)

Year 10:
Students have the option of selecting from the following subjects for a whole Semester.
Woodwork - $50 materials fee
Metalwork – $50 materials fee
Electronics – $100 materials fee
3D CAD – Materials costs based on product design
Automotive (Car Maintenance) - $10

Year 11:
Students have the option of selecting from the following subjects for a whole Semester.
Furniture & Construction - $60 materials fee
Creative Woodwork - $60 materials fee
Industry & Entrepreneurial Solutions – material fees determined with product design
Metalwork (can be studied for a whole year) – $60 materials fee or $120 materials fee
Electronics – $90 materials fee
3D CAD – Materials costs based on product design
Digital Communication Solutions – Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) Certification course
Industrial Design Solutions: Automotive (whole year) – material/items costs determined with project development
Coding Digital Solutions
Intro to Web Design

Year 12:
Students have the option of selecting from the following subjects for a whole year, however, only a maximum of two can be chosen for ATAR.

PLEASE NOTE: A student wanting to undertake a University Pathway can only study TWO Technology subjects but they must be in different strands. For example, a student cannot study Furniture Contruction and Metalwork together as they are both Material Solutions subjects.

Furniture Construction (Material Solutions) - $120 materials fee
Industry & Entrepreneurial Solutions - materials fee determined with product design
Metalwork (Material Solutions) – $120 materials fee
Electronics (Robotic & Electronic Solutions) – $120 materials fee
3D CAD (Digital Communication Solutions) – Materials costs based on product design
Stage 2 VET Automotive (Cert II – offered through Barossa TAFE)
Woodwork CAD Metalwork
